Asia shrugs off Trump’s new tariff threat, as governments hope they can get a deal before Aug. 1

Asian markets largely shrugged off the Trump administration’s latest announcement of tariff rates on some of its trading partners, as the U.S. president also seemingly pushed the start date for new taxes to Aug. 1. On Monday, Trump’s White House unveiled flat 25% tariffs on Japan and South Korea, two of the U.S’s trading partners. Those are at roughly the same level that Trump originally threatened back in April. But now, U.S. trading partners have until Aug. 1 to negotiate new trade deals, instead of a previously imposed July 9…

Roger Federer is now a billionaire, but he’s made more money investing in this company than winning 20 Grand Slams

Roger Federer is most known for being one of the most decorated players in men’s tennis history—having won 20 Grand Slam titles—but you can now also call him a billionaire. The Swiss tennis star has amassed an estimated net worth of about $1.3 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index. That includes $130.6 million in prize money over his 24 years on the court, during which he won at Wimbledon eight times and the U.S. Open five.  But it’s Federer’s deals off the court that have led to a far greater…

Companies want AI systems to perform better than the average human. Measuring that is difficult.

Hello and welcome to Eye on AI…In this edition…Meta snags a top AI researcher from Apple…an energy executive warns that AI data centers could destabilize electrical grids…and AI companies go art hunting. Last week, I promised to bring you additional insights from the “Future of Professionals” roundtable I attended at the Oxford University Said School of Business last week. One of the most interesting discussions was about the performance criteria companies use when deciding whether to deploy AI. Chime sticky user base base boosts stock price

It’s been less than a month since Chime Financial went public, but the neobank is winning over analysts who are already writing bullish predictions about the company’s prospects.  KBW research analyst Sanjay Sakhrani wrote in a research note on July 7 that Chime is emerging as a winner in the segment that caters to low-income consumers. He issued an “Outperform” rating for Chime, along with a $42 price target. Founded in 2012, Chime offers traditional financial services, like fee-free checking and savings accounts, to U.S. consumers earning up to $100,000…

This year’s Amazon’s Prime Day is the most unpredictable ever thanks to tariffs and AI

If you look back 10 years to the first and original Amazon Prime Day sales event, you can squint and see the outlines of today’s annual discount shopping extravaganza. But some of the details, and a lot of the external environment, have dramatically changed since. The 2025 Prime Day version is a four-day long event that kicks off on Tuesday July 8, up from two days in 2024, and—as the name would still suggest—a single day affair during the inaugural 2015 event. Like many businesses these days, independent Amazon sellers,…

Macron says France and the UK will ‘save Europe’ even though Brexit was all about Britain leaving the EU

French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday urged Britain to stick close to its neighbors despite its exit from the European Union, saying France and the U.K. will “save Europe” by standing for democracy, law and international order in a dangerous world. On a state visit that mixed royal pageantry with tough political talks on Ukraine and migration, Macron said Europe must strengthen its economy and defenses and reduce its dependence “on both the U.S. and China.” Macron’s three-day trip, at the invitation of King Charles III, is the first state visit to the U.K. by a European…

Trump doubles down on Aug. 1 tariff deadline as stocks continue to dip

Markets extended their downward slide on Tuesday as investors remained wary about the looming tariff deadline, with the S&P 500 dipping 0.07%. After a celebratory June, which saw the S&P 500 reach record highs, July is off to a gloomy start. The threat of tariffs looms once again for investors, as President Trump insists he will stand by a new negotiation deadline of Aug. 1 for the bruising campaign of levies that he announced in April. Stocks continued their downward dip from Monday, with the S&P 500 falling 0.07%, driven…

Employees are so worried and stressed about world affairs nearly 70% say it’s hurting their productivity at work

Here’s another acronym to add to your vocabulary: VUCA. It stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, and it is just as dramatic as it sounds. A pair of economists coined the term VUCA in the late ‘80s and the US Army War College picked up on it in the early ‘90s to describe how the US was faring in the post-Cold War environment. New research suggests the country is in a similar era of volatility, and it’s impacting the workforce. Some 42% of employees say their stress is induced…
